Mini Botanical Abstracts

Have you ever looked at abstract art and thought, “I wouldn’t even know where to start”? I hear you. Abstract can feel like this mysterious land of feelings and textures, and sometimes we need a friendly nudge to get going. That’s exactly why I created this little project: the Mini Botanical Abstracts tutorial.

Start Small

When you’re overwhelmed or unsure where to begin, a tiny 5cm x 5cm canvas is the perfect place to start. It's low-pressure, easy to fill, and incredibly satisfying. You only need a handful of gathered treasures and scraps of fabric. This tutorial is a gentle invitation to play with nature, intuition, and imperfection.

Abstract art is deeply personal, expressing emotions, ideas, moods, or even intangible energies. So, the idea of creating a step-by-step tutorial on creating something so intuitive might initially feel a bit contradictory. But hear me out.

Think of it not as a strict recipe but as an invitation—a gentle prompt—a way to dip your toes into mixed media and abstract art without pressure. In this tutorial, I’ll guide you through making a tiny 5cm canvas artwork using gathered natural materials and cotton fabric.

What you use will naturally be different from what I use, and that’s the magic of it. Each piece will be entirely unique, just like the person making it.

This isn’t about copying or following rigid steps. It’s about getting the creative flow flowing. It’s about play, texture, curiosity, and learning to see possibilities in unexpected materials. Sometimes, starting small and tangible helps open the door to bigger, freer, more personal creations.

So, if you’ve ever looked at abstract art and thought, “I wouldn’t even know where to start,”—this is the place. Gather your bits, and let’s begin.
